Moving into a new home is always exciting but before you go putting in your furniture and decorating the walls and floors, it’s worth making sure you’ve got a blank canvas to work with.
You never know to what extent the last occupants have done when it comes to cleaning and preparing the property for you. Some will do the bare minimum, while others might do everything you’d expect to ensure you move into a clean and presentable space.
Here are five things to do before decorating a home so that you don’t have any fuss going forward.
Hire a cleaning service
A cleaning service is something that you’ll definitely want to take advantage of, especially if you’ve noticed that the previous residents have done very little cleaning around the place. Hiring a move out cleaning service is typical for you to do for your property as a courtesy to others, however, that’s not always the case for everyone.
With that being said, you might want to bring in the cleaners to do a deep clean of the whole property so that you can move in everything without it needing to get dirty from the space.
Repair any fixtures or fittings for a blank canvas
When it comes to decorating a new home, if you’re not the only owner to move into the property, you might find that some of the fixtures or fittings have been damaged or are broken and were never fixed.
If that’s the case, then it’s definitely worth going around the property and making those fixes as soon as you can. Repairing them is a lot better than just leaving them as they are and perhaps causing more problems over time.
Plan out where your furniture is going
When it comes to decorating a space, you first want to figure out where furniture will be going. Usually, this is placed in the property prior to doing any decorating anyway but it’s good to know where everything is going so that it makes decorating easier.
Ideally, you want to be able to decorate before the furniture goes in but that’s not always possible. Figure out where the furniture is best placed before putting it down in the space.
Make use of natural lighting when decorating
Natural lighting is a great way of making use of the space when decorating. You’re likely to be more strategic with the color palette you use, to the number of mirrors you might want to add to the space in order to make it feel bigger.
Try not to put anything in front of your windows that would otherwise block the beautiful lighting coming into the space.
Make a clear storage plan
A clear storage plan is worth doing, especially when it comes to decorating a new home. The last thing you want is clutter or anything that doesn’t have a home, taking up the floor space. That’s only going to lead to it feeling cramped and tight in the space.
Decorating a new home is exciting so use these tips to make it a fun process all around.
