It can definitely be agreed that there’s nothing worse than climbing into bed, exhausted and ready to drift off, only to find yourself wide awake and staring at the ceiling. The truth is, your bedroom might not be as sleep-friendly as you think. Sure, you might have decorated to look like a sanctuary, but looks and functionality aren’t necessarily the same.
Just think about it; tossing and turning, feeling restless, or waking up groggy could be your space quietly sabotaging your shut-eye. But all it really takes is a few tweaks, and you can turn things around and make your bedroom the peaceful retreat it’s supposed to be. But where do you even start?
Clutter That’s Stealing Your Zen
Well, for starters, it’s hard to relax when your room looks more like a storage unit than a serene escape. Just think about it; piles of clothes, tangled cords, or even a messy nightstand can create a low-key sense of chaos that makes it tough to wind down.
While it might sound generic, a clutter-free space instantly feels calmer. So, just try and clear out anything that doesn’t belong, and keep surfaces clean and simple. Basically, you want to remove clutter from your mind, and you can only do that by physically removing clutter.
Lighting That’s Throwing You Off
If your room has lighting that’s too harsh or full of screen glare, it’s not doing your sleep any favours. It might help to either keep overhead lights off (and use a lamp instead) or even look into dimmers. Also, try to limit screen time before bed, that’s also messing with your sleep.
Bedding That Isn’t Doing Its Job
If your bed doesn’t feel like a cosy haven, well, something’s wrong. This is the most important aspect of them all. So, scratchy sheets, a lumpy mattress, or pillows that just aren’t cutting it can completely ruin your sleep game.
The right bedding makes all the difference. Sure, it can be a bit expensive, but you can’t put a price on good sleep. So, ideally, look into high-quality linen sheets, consider a weighted blanket, and actually hunt for a pillow that you love rather than using some random one that you’ve owned for a decade.
There’s Noise That Won’t Leave You Alone
Maybe it’s the buzz of traffic, a loud TV in another room, or a creaky floorboard, but overall, noise has a way of creeping in and stealing your sleep. Even subtle sounds can keep your brain on high alert. Ideally, it might help to even consider investing in a white noise machine or playing calming nature sounds to drown out distractions. But on top of that, go the extra mile and look into heavy curtains since this can block out some of the outside rackets.
The Temperature is All Wrong
Needless to say, no one sleeps well in a room that feels like a sauna or an icebox. So, being too hot or too cold can make even the most comfortable setup feel unbearable. But it helps to have breathable bedding, and maybe even a quiet fan can help you too.
